The Christian Right and Mike Huckabee

21 Feb

I have watched with interest this year the reaction of Christian leaders to Mike Huckabee’s candicacy for President. He is almost certainly (Pat Robertson not withstanding) the most devout evangelical to ever run for President, yet he has, until very late in the game, not garnered the support of many of the the best-known leaders of the evangelical movement. I wonder why not. The cynical side of me thinks it is because the leaders of the Christian Right are more about the Right than they are about the Christian. Courting power has always been a dangerous game for Christians, even in recent years. The Cal Thomas book Blinded By Might shows some of the flaws of the Moral Majority of the 80’s. On the other hand, some leaders may simply question whether he has the capacity to lead effectively as President. I don’t know but it has been interesting to watch. I am not a Huckabee supporter, but I figured a lot of the leaders of the evangelical movement would get behind his candicacy.
