What Akin Should Have Said

22 Aug

Trevin Wax wrote an excellent article this week about the controversy over a Republican politician’s comment about rape and abortion. There is a need for consistency in the pro-life position, even in the most painful of circumstances. Thankfully, the percentage of abortions due to rape is low, less than one percent. Nevertheless, we need to think this through if we are to stand for unborn life. Again, the issue is not a desire to eradicate the right to privacy, but to say that the right to privacy can not include the right to take the life of another human being.

One of the things that struck me about Wax’s article is, though Wax is a Christian, he did not invoke his religion as  a part of his argument. Some would see this as a detriment, but there is also a sense in which this points out that one does not have to use religious arguments to be pro-life. I am thankful for all, religious and non-religious, who will stand up for human life.
