An Excellent Article for Pastors and Church Members

28 Nov

One of my favorite passages of Scripture as a pastor is 1 Peter 5 . . .

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

This is such a good passage because it gets down to the heeart of the pastor. Any pastor can go through the motions of ministry for a while but the best pastors have the qualities listed here in 1 Peter.

There is an excellent, convicting article relating to this passage this morning on Desiring God. It is well-worth your time to read even if you are not a pastor. And let me say, as a final word, that you may read the article and think that your pastor falls short of the truths shared in 1 Peter and in the article. Let me encourage you not to simply be angry at your pastor or to talk about your pastor’s shortcomings with your spouse or friends. There may be things you need to talk with him about, and it is good for you to lovingly confront him when you have a problem. But above all, pray for your pastor. God can work in hearts, even the hearts of pastors. Pray for God to guide your pastor and for Christ to own his heart.
