Today’s Readings — Leviticus 17-19 & Mark 6:14-29

The passage about John the Baptist’s death is one of the tragic episodes in the gospels. John spoke truth and ended up dead because of it. Many of us know the contours of that story.

What I saw as I read through the passage this time was something from the first verse of the story, verse 14. It reads, “King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’ name had become known.” Now what was the “it” Herod heard about? It seems to me from the immediate context that it was the ministry of the disciples in going out two by two to preach and heal. If this is true, then the disciples are really acting as we are called to act in 2 Corinthians 5:20. “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, God making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.”

May we, like the disciples, be faithful ambassadors of Christ.
