Today’s Readings — Numbers 20-24 & Mark 8:1-10

Moses struck the rock and God punished him. Why? We could say on the surface that it was because Moses struck the rock instead of speaking to it as God had told him to do. That would be correct. But much like the case of the sons of Aaron, the problem was not simply disobedience to God’s instructions but a deeper issue of robbing God of His glory. Moses said, “Shall we bring water from the rock for you?” and then he struck the rock. The focus was on Moses’ ability to give the people water. This took the focus off of God as their provider and put Moses front and center. God will not abide this because God’s glory, God front and center, the understanding that He is the bread and water of our lives, is essential to our spiritual and emotional well-being. When we put ourselves at the center, we are always fighting a losing battle.
