Today’s Readings — Deuteronomy 7-11 & Mark 9:2-8

Why did God choose Israel as His people? Deuteronomy chapter 7 tells us . . .

“It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set His love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that He swore to your fathers, that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.”

Israel was not special because of anything in them. They were not favored by God because of their faith or purity or race. They were favored by God because God set His love on them. Unmerited favor is the story of the Bible from beginning to end. Now, in Jesus, God has a new people from every nation who are favored, not because of anything in them, but because of the love and mercy of God. Salvation is of the Lord.
