Behold Your God — Week Nine, Day Four

27 Jul

Last night one of my children was sitting on my lap when it was time to go to bed and they said, “I love you so much.” And I said, “I love you too, now it’s time to go to bed.” “Noooo” was their reply. And in that simple interaction there is a picture of where we often are as Christians. We feel a love for God but we do not want to do what He says. We would rather do what we feel like doing when what God calls us to do contradicts our desires. What if my child said, “I love you” day after day but never obeyed what I said, what should I think about their love? Empty words, right? Because to love one in authority includes obedience to them. When it comes to God, the ultimate authority, this principle is especially important because God never errs in what He commands us to do. This is why Jesus said in John 14, “if you love me, you will obey my commands.”

“Love is obedience. Obedience is both the expression and evidence of genuine love towards God.”     — Clyde Cranford
